Hey everyone, it’s Aviva again! Today, I want to share something really close to my heart—my experience being part of a diabetes community. It’s honestly one of the best things I’ve done since being diagnosed. When I first found out I had diabetes, it felt like I was stepping into a completely unknown world. I had no idea how to manage my new lifestyle, and even though I had support from family and friends, I often felt alone in my journey.
That all changed when I discovered there are vibrant communities out there filled with people who truly get what it’s like to live with diabetes. It’s been such an uplifting experience to be part of a group where we share stories, tips, struggles, and victories. Let me take you along as I talk about how I got involved, what we do for fun, and how being part of a supportive community has helped me adopt a healthier lifestyle—something I know will resonate with you if you’re living with diabetes, too.
The First Steps: How I Found My Diabetes Community
I remember feeling really nervous about joining a diabetes group at first. I thought, “What if I don’t fit in?” or “What if everyone is super strict and serious all the time?” But let me tell you, those fears were gone the moment I walked into my first meetup.
I started by joining a local group that meets once a month, and from the very beginning, I felt welcomed and understood. Everyone there was so warm and open about their experiences, which made it easy for me to open up about mine. We didn’t just sit around talking about our diagnosis or treatment plans—we laughed, joked, and bonded over shared experiences.
If you’re hesitant to join a diabetes group, I completely understand that initial fear. But it’s such a relief to be surrounded by people who are going through the same things you are. There’s an unspoken understanding in these communities that makes you feel seen and heard.
Making Friends and Finding Fun
One of the best parts about joining a diabetes community is the friendships I’ve made. When you connect with people who know exactly what you’re going through, it feels different. We get together for regular events—whether it’s a group workout, a cooking class, or just hanging out over coffee—and those moments have become some of the highlights of my month.
I’ve met people from all walks of life, each with their own unique story of managing diabetes. Some were diagnosed young, others later in life like me. But regardless of when or how they got the diagnosis, we all share the common goal of living a full, healthy life. And let me tell you, we don’t let diabetes stop us from having fun!
We’ve done everything from hiking trips to friendly bowling nights. One of my favorite activities was a yoga class organized by our group. Not only did we all have a good laugh attempting (and sometimes failing) the poses, but it was also such a relaxing way to manage stress and focus on our health together.
Building a Diabetes-Friendly Lifestyle Together
One thing I’ve learned through being part of this community is that managing diabetes isn’t just about the right diet or taking medication—it's about creating a lifestyle that supports your health and well-being in a holistic way. And doing that together with other people makes it so much easier.
Here are a few key things we focus on in our community, and I hope these tips will help you if you’re figuring out your own diabetes-friendly lifestyle:
1. Balanced Eating with a Twist
In our group, we love to cook and share diabetes-friendly recipes. It’s fun because we get to try new things and put a healthy twist on our favorite dishes. We host cooking nights where we gather, prepare meals together, and exchange tips on portion control, carb counting, and flavoring without added sugars.
What I love about these gatherings is how creative everyone gets. We’ve made everything from cauliflower crust pizza to sugar-free desserts that still taste amazing. I’ve learned that eating with diabetes doesn’t have to be boring or restrictive—it just takes some experimentation and a willingness to try new ingredients. Plus, when you’re cooking with friends, it doesn’t feel like “work” or a “diet,” it’s just fun!
2. Staying Active Together
One thing we’re all really passionate about is staying active. Exercise is so important for managing diabetes, but sometimes it can feel hard to motivate yourself, especially when you’re doing it alone. That’s where the community comes in! We organize group walks, bike rides, and even Zumba classes to make fitness something we all enjoy together.
It’s amazing how much easier it is to get moving when you have a group of people cheering you on. I’ve found that I look forward to our exercise meetups because they’re social and fun, not just about burning calories or lowering blood sugar. Plus, it’s nice to be in a space where everyone understands the need to manage energy levels and take breaks when needed.
3. Mental and Emotional Support
Managing diabetes isn’t just about the physical side of things—it’s also about taking care of your mental and emotional health. In our group, we make sure to check in with each other about how we’re feeling, especially on the tough days. It’s easy to get discouraged when your blood sugar levels are fluctuating, or you feel like you’re constantly managing an endless list of things.
Having friends who remind me that it’s okay to have those moments, and who offer advice and support, has made a huge difference. We even have a WhatsApp group where we send each other motivational messages, share victories (like finally getting that A1C down!), and offer support when someone’s having a tough day. It’s a constant reminder that we’re all in this together.
Choosing a Healthy Lifestyle: It’s a Journey, Not a Destination
One thing I’ve come to realize through this community is that choosing a healthy lifestyle isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making small, sustainable changes that add up over time. Whether it’s adding more vegetables to your meals, finding an exercise routine you actually enjoy, or taking time to de-stress, it’s about finding what works for you and sticking with it.
For me, being part of a diabetes community has been life-changing because it makes this journey feel less overwhelming. I have people to lean on, and I get to be there for them too. We lift each other up and celebrate our progress—no matter how big or small.
My Advice for You
If you’re living with diabetes and haven’t connected with a community yet, I encourage you to give it a try. Whether it’s an online group, a local meetup, or even just finding a diabetes buddy to share your journey with, having that support system makes all the difference.
Don’t be afraid to reach out and get involved. It’s amazing how much joy and connection you’ll find when you surround yourself with people who understand what you’re going through. We all deserve to live full, happy lives, and we don’t have to do it alone.
I’d love to hear from you—are you part of a diabetes community? What has your experience been like? Let’s continue this conversation in the comments. And if you’re looking for a community or have questions, feel free to reach out to me!
Take care,
Aviva Miriam
